Frequently Asked Questions

What is a typical day like?

A typical day at VAMS begins with the opening of the “daily document”. This is a single document sent to the student through email. This document features all of the independent work for the day. The daily independent work is consistent and includes a daily writing prompt, English assignment or vocabulary builder, a current event write up, geography task, math practice problems, practice science problems, and a content reading of the day. The document takes between 3 and 4.5 hours depending on the student. This leads to the 3 hour live interactive portion of the day which runs 12:30-3:30 Eastern Standard Time (9:30-12:30 Pacific Standard Time.) This session is broken down into 3 one-hour lectures on Science, Math, and Social Studies, with Language Arts woven into all subjects.

How does the program work?

Students attend school daily, they have a live three hour session with a credentialed teacher and three hours of independent assignments.

Do I need to teach my child?

No, although parents play an important role in any educational setting, VAMS is not a home school, it is a private school attended from home and taught by credentialed teachers.

Is this program only for gifted students?

No, any students willing to challenge themselves are welcome at VAMS, however attending does require that the student have self motivation and the ability to work independently for a portion of the day.

What are the costs involved?

Tuition and fees are listed on the tuition page.

What happens if my son/daughter is absent?

Any day a student is absent for the live session it is recorded and made available at the website. The students who missed the day are then required to watch the recording on their own time.

I work full time, do I need to be with my child?

VAMS does not require a parent to be home for a child to attend, however only you know your child well enough to know if they are mature enough to be un-monitored. Regardless of location all parents are alerted by telephone if a child is tardy, absent, or leaves class for any reason. Parents are also given special access to the classroom, which allows them to check on their child at anytime during the live session.

Am I required to monitor my son/daughter?

Yes, checking over your child’s work before it is turned in to make sure all parts are completed is essential to success. Parents have the option of receiving both a copy of the daily document as well as copies of all graded work. Parents are given a password to an online grade book and are encouraged to keep tabs on their child’s progress.

Can I visit the classroom?

Yes, visitor passes are available to interested parents and students.

What happens when my son/daughter transfers to high school?

Academic records will be sent upon request to any school, just like any other public or private school.
